Sit back, relax, get a slice of bread and a tea and read a story about how I discovered my love for baking the most delicious bread.

I have always loved baking bread. My dad was a professional baker and always taught me on the weekends. I have been friends with my rye sourdough starter since I was about 5 years old. There is something so therapeutic about getting your hands into a tub of flour and water and just working through the muscles of the dough until you can feel it relax and work. The art of fermentation has been fascinating me since I was young but I have properly studied it since 2016. Opening up my own little micro bakery has been a dream that I shared with my dad for a long time and finally it has come true!

The dream of a bakery

Even as a small girl I already planned opening a bakery with my friend, and during our weekly meet ups we wouldn't play with dolls or out in the mud, we'd plan our next batches of cookies and cakes! It was a dream that has stuck with me since then. Finally during a global pandemic, being locked in my house, and finding myself delivering breads to my local friends and neighbours, I decided it is time to make that dream come true.

Sourdough Sophia started as a small micro bakery in the heart of Crouch End, North London and run by myself and my husband Jesse. In the middle of our converted dining room we baked on a weekly basis offering our breads for local delivery and pick up to the local hungry crowd that just can't live without good, slow fermented bread.

We've launched a kickstarter campaign at the end of August 2020 so that we can expand into a real brick and mortar bakery in the heart of Crouch End! We had only 28 days to achieve our goal of £25k and we smashed the goal, earning just over £33k with over 570 backers. This money will enable us to buy equipment and do some essential works on the shop before we open and we are so grateful to everyone who got involved with the campaign to make this happen! Thank you and we are excited to get this project underway. Keep an eye on our instagram to follow our progress.

Besides bread, I also offer a range of other treats, such as sourdough croissants, pecan brownies and delicious cakes (with recipes from my 94-year old grandmother).
