Sourdough Sophia is truly a bakery born in the community.

During lockdown founders Sophia & Jesse set up a micro bakery from their dining room as a way to support and connect with the community.

Sophia, having grown up as a baker's daughter in Germany, and having been an obsessive home-baker throughout her life, had always secretly wanted to own a bakery of her own in order to be able to share her delicious creations.

The lockdown dining room bakery turned out to be the perfect opportunity to bring this to life!  

Sophia began baking sourdough bread and laminated pastries for the locals with a couple of key values that still continue to set her bakeries apart today.

Sustainable quality ingredients, artisanal techniques, innovative and ever-changing menu, and a homage to the comforting classics - food that makes you feel good!

Within a couple of weeks they attracted huge queues down the road from their little flat, and quickly ran out of space.

So, with the help of a successful kickstarter campaign and nearly 600 backers from the local community, they opened the doors to our bakery in 2020, only 8 months after they baked our very first loaf. 

The queues grew, the team grew and pretty soon they ran out of space, so in March 2024 they opened their second bakery on Essex Road with the help of a few incredibly successful crown funding rounds and gave their bakery production a bigger home!

This year (2025) they'll be opening two more sites in brand new communities in North London and are looking forward to joining further communities over the coming yeras.

We've won two world bread awards for our delicious wholemeal loaf and our focaccia. 

We've also won three great taste awards for our N8 Loaf, Wholemeal loaf and our house Kimchi!

We were also in  top five finalists for the UK high street shop of the year award!
